W&S Fund for Interdisciplinary Research on Breast Cancer
BREAST CANCER RESEARCH AT ROCKEFELLER
TODAY AT THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY, scientists in many of our 74 laboratories conduct investigations related to breast cancer. Their studies of telomeres, cancer vaccines, metastasis, cancer stem cells, microRNAs, DNA repair, epigenetics, and new imaging methods are providing insights that may yield very specific benefits for breast cancer patients.
Breast cancer is a complex disease with many different subtypes, still incompletely understood. Too often, treatment is a matter of trial and error, as patients and their physicians try to find the most beneficial therapies with the fewest detrimental side effects.
New approaches to diagnosis, treatment, and prevention depend on the sort of fundamental research under way at Rockefeller. Our scientists have already identified promising targets for new chemotherapies and metastasis inhibitors. They are designing novel diagnostic tools and precisely targeted drugs tailored to the needs of individual patients. And they are devising vaccines to strategically boost the immune response against breast cancer.
