Approximately 250 guests gathered in Caspary Auditorium for the Women & Science Evening Program—Sun Exposure, Genetic, and Melanoma: A Worldwide Health Challenge—held at The Rockefeller University on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. The event, which was co-hosted by the Parents & Science Initiative, featured Rockefeller’s Leon Hess Assistant Professor Sohail Tavazoie, whose presentation on melanoma addressed the diagnosis of the disease, preventative measures, new therapies, and his own lab’s exciting research on the nature of metastasis and possible ways combat it in the future. The panel discussion and question and answer session following the lecture featured Dr. Tavazoie, Jennifer Stein, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center, and Debra Black, RU Trustee and Melanoma Research Alliance Co-Founder, and covered warning signs, steps we can all take to limit harmful sun exposure, and a conversation about the impact of philanthropy on this previously underfunded area of biomedical research. The synergy of the perspectives of the three experts made for a truly stimulating and insightful evening.
